PHONE SCAM WARNING:
Using a computer these days to help with our everyday lives has become commonplace now, with both the young and the elderly learning new computer skills.
However - a word of caution: New technology brings new dangers in scams to deprive people of their money.
I would like to draw people's attention to a scam that has had several of my elderly customers in a panic, and has succeeded in extracting large amounts of money from members of the public.
A company may try to phone you purporting to have been advised by Microsoft that your computer has been causing problems on the network.
They will try to take over your computer, and convince you that there are many problems which only their intervention can resolve. They will try to get you to authorise credit/debit card payments for several hundred pounds. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS FRAUD.
If you are suspicious, contact a local IT professional, or contact the Police, who have set up a web-site to record details of these criminal attempts to defraud.
